I recently finished an article on credit ratings and credit scores. I thought it would be helpful right here.
Your credit report may get a score, but it’s no game
Golf scores are considered better the lower they are. In bowling you want the highest score you can get. How about your credit score?
What’s a good credit score? How much does it take to have what you might consider a perfect score? What difference does it make?
Lots of good questions, but not many good answers floating around out there.
Did you ever see an auto advertisement that offers a $5,000 rebate or 0% interest for five years? Did you notice the “OAC” somewhere in the ad? That “OAC” stands for “on approved credit”. If you have a credit score of 598, guess what? No great interest rate or rebate. It’s probably hello to 21% and a large down payment!
Then there’s always, “Why do I have to pay this big deposit for my cell phone and you don’t?” Or, “Why did they turn down my application for this great apartment?” And then there’s always, “Why did you turn down my job application?”
Your credit score will haunt you where ever you go. Not only does it keep showing up, but most people don’t even know what their score is.
Let’s say you do know what that haunting score is. What’s next? Is it good, so - so or terrible. If you do have a poor credit score, can it be improved. Will it ever go away? Or am I just dead in the water?
Credit reports are always received from three different agencies, Equifax, Trans Union and Experian. These agencies are used by all credit reporting companies to get your report along with your credit score.
Early in my finance career we used a scoring system that we put together from different items in the applicant’s life, paying habits, income, time on job and much more. Your credit score is formulated in much the same manner today.
The credit agencies use five basic areas to formulate your credit score. They work as follows:
35% of your score is made up of your payment history;
30% for the amount you owe;
15% is based on the length of time you have had credit;
10% is on new credit; and
10% on other factors.
I hope this gives you an idea how your credit score is created. But now that you have it, what does it mean?
The higher your score is calculated the better your report. Different institutions use your credit score in different ways to influence what you can and can’t do. Your potential employer might have a minimum score to hire someone.
When you buy that great car with a 0% interest rate you will need an extremely high score. Your cell phone company might need a lot lower credit score to get you an account with no deposit.
Most places that use credit ratings break up the possible scores into six groups. They are as follows:
720 + are the very highest scores;
700 - 719 is next level;
675 - 699 next;
620 - 674 next;
560 - 619 getting pretty shaky; and
500 - 559 really sad.
If you would like to better your score, it is possible to correct and rebuild both your credit report and score. Some programs repair credit for free and some cost. If they charge, the costs can run as high as $200 or more.
A program like this can take a minimum of about two months to start bringing improvements. The great thing is it can be done.
Credit reporting becomes more complex each year, Everyone is getting into the picture of requiring a credit report. Everybody is ran through a credit check for almost anything.
The bottom line is you must have good credit to survive. A person must build up his credit and then maintain it. If he slips, he must correct it. You must always be on top of this critical situation.
Don’t cheat yourself or your family. Take action today and you’ll find tomorrow will be a far better place.
